How to sew a large cosmetic bag with zippered top

How to calculate measurements for a custom cosmetic bag with zipper top closure

Hey y’all and welcome to Sewspire!

In this video I am going to share the formulas I used to calculate the measurements to create a custom cosmetic bag with zippered top closure.

If you would like to duplicate the bag as shown you would use the following measurements:

Cut 4 Body Panels 15″ wide by 11″ tall, back two with batting
Cut 1 Pocket Panel 15″ wide by 8″ tall
Cut 1 Strap 4″ wide x 10″ long
Cut 1 piece of 1/2″ cording 10″ long

The patchwork panels were crafted using the following measurements:

Cut two: 15″ x 7″
Cut four: 15″ x 3″

The finished measurements on the bag created in this video are:

11″ across the base
13.5″ across the top
3″ deep

The following formula will allow you to create a one of a kind bag that holds your contents perfectly.

Formula for determining the cut measurements of the 4 body panels…

width of the zipper = the cut width of the body panel

height of the tallest item + your desired finished depth + 2” = the cut height of the body panel

Formula for determining the cut measurements of the pocket panel…

height of the tallest item + 2” is the cut height of the pocket

width of the zipper = the cut width of the pocket

I hope you enjoy the project and will consider making a small donation to offset the costs of producing this video or simply as an expression of your appreciation:
