How to sew a drawstring bag with waxed canvas base

Hey y’all and welcome to Sewspire!

Today I am here to show you how to sew a patchwork drawstring bag with a waxed canvas base. You will need approximately a half yard of material and can easily use a continuous cut of fabric for this project rather than the patchwork panel if you prefer.

As shown the exterior of my bag was crafted by stitching three panels together to create a larger panel that measures 16” tall by 21” wide. The three panels each measure 21” wide by 8”, 6.5” and 3”. I used a 3/8” seam allowance to join and then pressed and trued the panel up to measure 16” x 21”.

You will also need an interior panel that measures 16” x 21” and a drawstring panel that measures 2” x 30”.

When finished this bag will offer you approximately 13” of usable height. When opened the top measures 9.5” and the base 4” x 4”.

I plan to use mine as a lunch sack. Please let me know in the comments how you will be using yours.

I will be back next week with another inspired sewing project. Until then, the creative genius in me will be celebrating the creative genius in you!
