Inspired Thought #2: Top ten reasons people are no longer sewing.

I am proof anyone can learn to sew!

Today, I present to you my official Top Ten List of The Reasons People No Longer Sew which I have compiled from multiple conversations with guests who’ve visited my main street sewing boutique and been so kind as to humor me with their woeful sewing stories. To set the stage, our conversation usually began something like this:

Guest enters the studio and queries: “Is everything handmade?

Me: “Yes, it is.”

Guest looks around in awe and comments: “I love all of the colors and fabrics.”

Me: “Do you sew?”

Guest: “I’d love to; but…” or “Oh, no…”

(and then insert any one of the following excuses)

I never learned how to

Something is wrong with my machine

I don’t have the space anymore

I don’t own a sewing machine

I have a friend that does

My sister is the creative one

In school, I had this sewing teacher and…

I’ve tried and I can’t

I am not creative

I don’t have the time

Have you ever used any of these excuses? I have. Seriously.

I know that it might be hard for you to believe; but, there was a younger version of me, who once went into the fabric store and purchased twenty plus rolls of no sew iron on adhesive tape so I could glue curtains together rather than learn how to use a sewing machine.

At the time, I seriously believed it would be easier to glue the fabric and I actually looked at the sales clerk (who clearly was an experienced seamstress) straight in the eye and told her with conviction “I have tried to sew and I can’t.”

Of course, she just laughed at me and reaffirmed her position that it would be a whole lot easier to sew the curtains rather than use iron on glue. I in turn, affirmed my doubt, and headed home to spend the next three days gluing my curtains together.

(True story — you can ask my husband.)

And, then for like another 5 years I continued to glue any fabric that needed to be joined. More than 15 years later, I still have some of that original seam tape on hand. I laugh every time I see it in the craft closet and I think of the clerk who surely must have thought I was totally insane. Because who in the hell needs that much seam tape? No one!

What’s your funny “un” sewing story? Share it on our newly created Facebook page or comment below and we can rejoice together.

xoxo,

Andrea

    Hi Andrea,
I am frightened by patterns!! Do they still have clothing patterns that you have to cut out and pin the darts? I will say your projects 1-3 have me totally excited and thrilled about sewing and I can’t thank you enough. My new sewing machine has a new table it fits inside and I have a special space in the basement where I am in heaven as I cut fabrics and sew the projects. I have bombed a few but for the most part, they have turned out so cute. Thank you, Andrea!!

I can totally relate Nita! Every once in a while, I will work up the nerve to use another persons pattern and I never do complete it as outlined. I always end up changing a thing or two and bring it together in what I perceive to be a “more logical” formation. I think there are some commonalities amongst visual learners and this fear of patterns is definitely one of them! Happy stitching today! Andrea

It’s true, I remember the look on the girl’s face at the fabric store as Andrea asked for and then bought out the entire fabric glue inventory.
