Handmade Holiday Series: How to sew a weighted blanket slip cover

Video Tutorial https://youtu.be/_-EGMdYLefE

Hey y’all and thanks for joining me for the fourth project in our ongoing Handmade Holiday Series here at Sewspire. I really appreciate the fact that our friends at Fairfield express shipped two weighted blanket inserts (6 lbs and 12 lbs) for me to play with this week. You rock Fairfield!

I am excited to show you how the lap quilt cover comes together and do think this project makes an amazing gift for teens and adults alike. I hope that after you watch the video tutorial below you will be inspired to design your own lap quilt panel and thereby truly customize this project. If you would like to craft the cover as shown I will demonstrate how to do that with ease.

How to sew a weighted blanket cover using the Poly-fil 6 pound insert.

For this project you will need 1 Poly-fil Weighted Blanket Insert in the 6lb size. To begin, precut (28) 6″ x 6″ squares of cotton fabric and (5) 6″ x 38.25″ rectangles of cotton fabric for the front panel, (1) 48″ x 38.25″ rectangle of cotton fabric for the back panel + a like size piece of quilt batting for the front panel, (2) 3″ x 42″ strips of cotton fabric for the ties, (1) 3″ x 80″ strip of cotton fabric for the binding or (2) 3″ x 40″ strips of cotton fabric for the binding and (6) 3″ pieces of 1/4″ elastic to slightly modify the insert.

You can find the weighted blanket inserts at Walmart in the fabric / craft department or online: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Poly-fil-Weighted-Blanket-Insert-36-X-48-6LB/212434380

Please note: the 6 lb lap blanket insert is designed for children ages 5 and up and those who weigh more than 50 pounds.

I hope you enjoy the video and will share photos with me of your quilt panels on social media (all those links are below).

Until we meet again, the creative genius in me will be celebrating the creative genius in you!
