How to Sew a Large Scrappy Style Bin

Hey y’all and welcome to Sewspire!

Today I am here to show you how to sew a large bin–scrappy style–that you can use to create one of a kind gift baskets for friends and family this holiday season. I personally am going to create a set of these and use them to organize the studio for the New Year!

For this project, you will be working with 10″ long cuts of material in various widths. I begin by creating a long patchwork panel that measures 52″ long by 10″ wide and then cut my exterior panels from that. The interior is crafted from five solid cuts of material which measure 10″ x 10″ and are backed in Pellon 808 or 809.

For the exterior you will need four patchwork panels that measure 10″ x 10″ and one panel that measures 10″ x 12″ plus one piece of clear vinyl that measures 6″ x 5″ and two pieces of material that measure 3″ x 6″ to trim the vinyl pocket with.

The handles are crafted from two cuts of leather which measure 1″ x 9″. You can easily craft your own fabric handles using my standard strap making method and pieces of material which measure 5″ wide by 10″ long or like size pieces of webbing or strapping.

I hope you enjoy this project and will share how you intend to use your scrappy bin. I will be back next week with another inspired project. Until then, please know the creative genius in me will be celebrating the creative genius in you!
